The homepage of web designer Gregory James Wood

The Blog

Sod It, It’s Live

A brand new website, coming in your browsers! It's been 80% finished and I've been 80% happy with it for a few months, so today I just thought fuck it, I'll 'launch' it. So here it is, the new greg-wood.co.uk, a deliciously organized foray into the abnormalities and oddities of my grey matter. Or something.

Simple but (hopefully) Effective

It started off in December as something hugely grand, complex and detailed, and it’s ended up pretty formulaic and simple, but I like it. In fact, I like the simplicity of it and some little touches that make it a little different. I also don’t give a shit if it’s not ground breaking, or that it doesn’t use any slightly pointless browser-resize effects. I also am now officially in love with Helvetica 77 Condensed Bold, lovely.

To be honest, I’m too busy to write a massive post about any design decisions that were or weren’t made along the way, but I can say that it’s not (as always) completely finished. I’ll be working on bits and bobs here and there, changing around some of the drawings I don’t like, purging out some drunken-content writing from various pages and probably restyling some of the comments.

For a treat here’s a few original drawings that the site grew around.

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to talk about some bits of it that I like, and hopefully I like it enough not to abandon it within a month, but we’ll see. In the meantime, grab yourself some RSS action and I’ll be eternally grateful. All of you amazing people (all 42 of you) who were subscribed to the old site will have to update your feeds, sorry.

Oh, one more thing. I’d imagine IE6 is a complete write off, but I’m not fussed for now.

That’s all.

By the way, is this Expression Engine powered?

Cheers chaps, what lovely comments. There’s still a bit to do though.

    @collison, are you mental? It’s 8pm!

Yeah it’s using EE Tom, a pretty standard out-the-box example actually. I love it.

    Bloody hell.

I think this is terrific. Now my shiny new (unpublished) redesign doesn’t look nearly as nice.

Back to the drawing board… again.

    Oooooohhhh it’s super.

No, seriously I like it, it’s even motivating me to pay more attention to all that design waffle you bombard me with.

    Smashing.

Lovely.  All that doodling through meetings has paid off!

    Nice work Greg.

Thanks gents, glad you like it. I may write a less flippant and less tired post about it this weekend; between psd-ing, flv-ing and pages-ing that is.

I like the site too - especially the clean typography on the navigation and headers.

I really do think it could benefit from multiple, overlayed PNGs creating a parallax effect though.

    ;)
