Review: Cloverfield

Cloverfield is a film that has drawn many similarities with The Blair Witch Project due to the nature of it's filming, but because of the nature of the plot, it's a bastard of a film to review without giving anything away. Review: Cloverfield

Preceded by a pretty effective viral market campaign (Facebook profiles for characters, anonymous trailers, etc), the hype surrounding its release was significant. No one really knew what the film was about, except what was seen in the last trailer before release; a bunch of people at a party in New York, a big explosion, and then chaos. I reckon all the hype was very much deserved.

Filming

It’s filmed in a similar to style to that of the Blair Witch Project - with a handheld camera. When I first saw the latter at the cinema, I came out feeling mentally drained and glad it was over. I’d enjoyed it immensely, but one can only take so much adrenaline and tension in a cinema.

Well the same goes in a way for Cloverfield. Basically, it’s fucking intense. At the end when it finished, no-one in the audience moved for at least 2 minutes into the credits, something relatively unheard of in British cinemas.

As I’ve said there’s not a lot worth talking about without spoiling anything for those who haven’t seen it yet, but I can say that it’s a very, very good film. It’s a gritty, involving, massive rollercoaster, good work Mr Reeves.
